About Us and History

Van Dieman Paving is situated at the foothills of Ben Lomond, near the town of Rossarden, in North East Tasmania. The area surrounding Rossarden and Storeys Creek had rich deposits of tin and other precious metals. Mining of these metals commenced in the early 1900s, and continued through good & bad times with fluctuating tin prices & other circumstances creating the closure of the Rossarden mine in 1982.

Several years later Mr. Fred Scheppein secured a lease to utilise the surplus of mine tailings near the old Aberfoyle Mine site, and established the Van Dieman Paving factory. The tailings were ideal for the manufacture of concrete paving bricks as they contain approximately 65% quartz and the remainder of the tailings being made up of black granite and other hard metals.

A German designed Zenith paving manufacturing plant was installed with several different profiles available and with the addition of different oxides, various colours were available.

In 2004 Michael and Leonora Barker of Longford became the owners of Van Dieman Paving, and together with their other existing business, employ many local people. Van Dieman Paving can now offer an extensive service to the paving industry, with the manufacturers of industrial and domestic paving, with delivery, ground preparation and laying available.
